WHO: University of Rochester students have organized a silent auction to raise funds during Stem Cell Research Awareness Week, presented by the Society of Undergraduate Biology Students.
TIME, DATE, PLACE: Noon to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7, at Hirst Lounge in Wilson Commons
WHAT: The Stem Cell Research Silent Auction is a chance for members of the Rochester community to bid on items including Kaplan and Princeton Review Courses, GEVA Theatre tickets, restaurant gift certificates, golf packages, jewelry, and more.
Through the silent auction, students are hoping to raise money to purchase the HandBot, a robotic device that provides advanced physical therapy for the restoration of hand function in individuals after stroke or spinal cord injury.
The Society of Undergraduate Biology Students began hosting fundraisers four years ago, when student Katie Medford '09 was inspired to raise awareness and support for stem cell research in honor of her father, who suffered a spinal cord injury in 2002. Their events have raised a total of $12,000, which was donated to the University of Rochester's Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Institute.
FOR MORE INFORMATION: Media interested in covering the silent auction can call Melissa Greco Lopes at 585.260.6666 or email mgrecolo@ur.rochester.edu for more information.
