National Service Agency Board Chair Leads Discussion
WHO: Mark Gearan, board chair of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and president of Hobart and William Smith Colleges, will meet with University of Rochester administrators and area nonprofit leaders today to discuss ways that national service is addressing local challenges.
TIME, DATE, PLACE: 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 5, in the Welles-Brown Room of Rush Rhees Library (755 Library Road) on the River Campus.
WHAT: Gearan, who will be joined by Joel Seligman, president of the University of Rochester and Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, will lead several dozen leaders in a discussion about the agency\'s five-year strategic plan. He also will describe CNCS\'s new vision to drive greater impact toward solving national and local problems from unemployment to student achievement.
The Corporation for National and Community Service sponsors several programs in Rochester, including a Senior Corps program (hosted by the Community Place of Rochester), Rochester AmeriCorps (based at Monroe Community College), and the Rochester Youth Year AmeriCorps*VISTA program, housed in the Rochester Center for Community Leadership at the University of Rochester. Rochester Youth Year is coordinated collaboratively by Nazareth College, Roberts Wesleyan College, Geneseo, The College at Brockport, Rochester Institute of Technology, St. John Fisher College, and the University of Rochester.
The Rochester Urban Fellows program, which is an urban-immersion, civic engagement program for college students, also received sponsorship from CNCS for the first time in 2010, as an AmeriCorps*VISTA \"Summer Associate\" program.
