International Theatre Program Presents Shakespeare\'s \'The Winter\'s Tale\'
The University of Rochester\'s International Theatre Program concludes its 21st season with William Shakespeare\'s 1611 tragicomedy The Winter\'s Tale. The Rochester production opens April 14 at Todd Theater on the University\'s River Campus and includes an array of multimedia effects, including original music, songs, dances, and puppetry. The play also features one of Shakespeare\'s most dramatic stage directions: \"Exit pursued by a bear.\"
\"The Winter\'s Tale speaks to the universal desire to be given a second chance in love and life,\" says Nigel Maister, artistic director of the International Theatre Program and director and set designer of this production. The Winter\'s Tale begins with the reunion of two childhood friends, Leontes, the King of Sicilia, and Polixenes, King of Bohemia. The complex romance turns tragic when Leontes wrongly accuses his pregnant wife of an affair with Polixenes. The consequences of this accusation are violent, but the tale turns toward redemption by the end.
Maister is the recipient of a Drama League Directing Fellowship and is a founding member and the resident staging director of the new music ensemble Alarm Will Sound, with whom he has staged concerts at the Lincoln Center Festival, Carnegie Hall, and Miller Theatre.
Costume designer Emily Rebholz returns to the Todd Theatre after having worked on the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle award-winning Broadway production of Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson. She also worked on Rochester productions of You Can\'t Take it With You and Danton\'s Death. Lighting designer Aaron Black\'s New York credits include the Drama Desk Award-winning revival of Black Nativity, King Lear, and Waiting for Godot, all of which garnered him Audelco Award nominations for outstanding lighting design. Sound designer Obadiah Eaves\'s work has appeared on Broadway in many productions, including A Life in the Theatre, Accent on Youth, and Shining City as well as numerous past productions at Todd Theatre.
The Winter\'s Tale opens Thursday, April 14, and runs through Saturday, April 30. Tickets are $7 for students; $10 for UR alumni, faculty and staff, and for seniors (55 and over); and $13 for the general public. Tickets may be purchased online at www.rochester.edu/theatre, or by calling (585) 275-4088. Tickets also may be purchased an hour before each performance at the box office.
