University of Rochester junior Nicholas R. Slater has been selected to receive a Goldwater Scholarship. A graduate of Southern Columbia Area High School in Catawissa, Penn., Slater is majoring in mechanical engineering and will graduate in 2003. He will receive a grant of up to $7,500 to cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board.
The Goldwater Scholarship, which is endowed by the U.S. Congress to honor the late Sen. Barry M. Goldwater, is designed to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields. The Goldwater Foundation has awarded 3, 632 scholarships since 1986.
Slater, a resident of Elysburg, Penn., is one of 309 students named a Goldwater Scholar this year. Nationwide, 1,155 sophomores and juniors were nominated for this honor, which is awarded on the basis of academic merit.
This summer, Slater will conduct materials science research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Materials Processing Center. Outside of the classroom, he plays intramural basketball and is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Slater, who was recently elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa, is one of three University of Rochester students who were awarded a Goldwater Scholarship this year.
