Julie Camardo Steron, President of Zweigle\'s to Receive Susan B. Anthony Promise Award
On Tuesday, June 21, the University of Rochester\'s Susan B. Anthony Center for Women\'s Leadership will help celebrate 35 years of LPGA golf in Rochester through conversations with past, present, and future champions at the Wegmans LPGA Championship in Pittsford, N.Y.
The 6th annual Conversations with Champions event will feature discussions with champions Patty Sheehan and Pat Bradley, as well as rising stars Amanda Blumenherst and Azahara Muñoz. Gail Graham, also an LPGA veteran, will moderate. The event focuses on a range of topics, including women\'s strides toward equality in athletics and the evolution of the LPGA in Rochester.
\"We began Conversations with Champions to learn from successful women athletes what it means to be leaders in sports when the world rarely recognizes or equally rewards women\'s athleticism,\" said Nora Bredes, director of the Anthony Center. In honor of the championship\'s 35th anniversary, this year\'s discussion will look at the successes of three decades of the competition in Rochester. \"Every year we look forward to attracting some of the best women golfers in the world,\" said Kim Osur, marketing manager of the Wegmans LPGA Championship. This year\'s championship will feature a $2.5 million purse.
Julie Camardo Steron, president of Zweigle\'s Inc., will be awarded the 2011 Susan B. Anthony Promise Award at a VIP reception before the luncheon sponsored by Fidelity Investments. Established in 2006, the award honors a Rochester businesswoman whose career, leadership, energy, and wisdom exemplifies Susan B. Anthony\'s vision of equality in all fields. Past winners include Amy Leenhouts Tait, CEO of Broadstone Real Estate; Lynn Sullivan, CFO and Executive Vice President ABVI-Goodwill Industries of Greater Rochester; and Sarah Plasky, CEO of Aquavation .
In 2009, Camardo Steron became vice president of Zweigle\'s, a family owned and operated food manufacturer of hot dogs, sausages, and meat products, including the famous white hotdogs. She succeeds four generations of women in her family in positions of leadership and is the fourth woman in her family to head the Rochester-based company.
\"I\'m honored and humbled to have been chosen for this award,\" said Camardo Steron, who took on the role as owner from her mother in 2009. She also credits her success to her mother\'s \"continued support in helping me learn the business over the years.\"
Under Camardo Steron\'s leadership, Zweigle\'s received its official Woman Owned Business Certification from the Women Business Enterprise, a rarity in the male-dominated, meat packing industry. She is also a board member and chair of Foodlink, which provides food to more than 450 agencies in Central and Western New York, and a board member of the CDS Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing family support services to people with developmental diseases in Monroe County. Camardo Steron emphasizes the importance of giving back to the community in both personal and professional capacities. In addition to supporting organizations like Golisano Children\'s Hospital, United Way and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Zweigle\'s also supports area schools, athletics teams, youth programs, and various sporting venues.
The 2011 Conversations with Champions will take place at 11:30 a.m. on June 21, inside the Summit FCU Pavilion at Locust Hill Country Club in Pittsford. It is co-sponsored by the Polisseni Agency, a Fairport business that specializes in insurance. A special reception will be held before the luncheon where members of the panel will be available for autographs and photos in a private setting. Tickets are $50 for the reception or luncheon alone; $75 for the reception, luncheon, and conversation. All tickets include a course pass for the day and can be purchased online at www.wegmanslpga.org. For reservations or more information, contact the tournament office at (585) 427-7100 or the Anthony Center at (585) 275- 8799.
