Svetozar Stojanovic, a leader in the Serbian opposition movement, will present a lecture titled "Serbia, Kosovo, and the NATO World Order," at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 1, in the Gowen Room in Wilson Commons on the University of Rochester River Campus.
Stojanovic is currently serving as a distinguished guest fellow at the Center for Inquiry International in Buffalo. He is also a founder and first president of the Council for Democratic Transformation of Serbia, a group of about 50 leading non-party opposition intellectuals, as well as founder and first president of the Council for Cooperation of Non-Governmental Organizations, composed of about 100 groups all in the opposition to Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic.
As a figure in the center of Yugoslavian politics, Stojanovic will speak on the state of Milosevic's hold on power, the effect of the NATO bombing on the opposition movement, and lessons learned.
This event is free and open to the public and is part of the Skalny Lecture and Artist Series, which is sponsored by the Center for Polish and Central European Studies. The center is part of the University's Department of Political Science and provides an opportunity for students to study the languages, cultures, politics, and histories of Central Europe.
