The U.S. Department of Education has awarded the University of Rochester's Department of Physics and Astronomy nearly $1 million over the next three years.
The award is the third in a row that the department has garnered through the Department of Education's program for Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need. The latest grant brings to $1.8 million the total that the department has received through the program over a nine-year period. Of that, more than $700,000 has gone directly to the University as tuition revenue.
"These grants have helped us attract and retain high-quality graduate students, while at the same time limiting the cost of our program to the University," says Paul Slattery, chair of the department. "They have helped us maintain the very high quality of our graduate program."
The program is intended to help boost the number and quality of U.S. citizens and residents pursuing careers in science and engineering. In particular, the department is working to increase the number of women and other underrepresented minorities pursuing graduate studies in physics or astronomy. A visiting committee recently commended the department for creating a hospitable environment for women students and professors.
