DATE, TIME, AND PLACE: Thursday, April 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Hawkins-Carlson Room of Rush Rhees Library on the University of Rochester River Campus.
WHAT: Andrew Scull, author of Madhouses, Mad-doctors and Madmen, and The Asylum as Utopia, presents the Neilly Lecture, \"A Psychiatric Revolution.\"
One of the world\'s leading scholars on the history of psychiatry, Scull writes reviews regularly for the Times Literary Supplement, and his essays have also appeared in such journals as Nature, Brain, the Lancet, The Nation, and the London Review of Books. He has written or edited more than 20 books, including Museums of Madness; Decarceration; Madhouses, Mad-doctors and Madmen; and Social Order/Mental Disorder. His latest book is Hysteria: The Disturbing History.
A graduate of Balliol College Oxford, Scull completed his doctorate at Princeton University and a postdoctoral fellowship in medical history at University College London. He has held faculty appointments at the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, and the University of California, San Diego, where he has been Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Science Studies since 1994. He has held fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Historical Studies, and two University of California Presidential Fellowships in the Humanities. In 1993, he served as president of the Society for the Social History of Medicine.
Scull will be introduced by Dr. Stephanie Brown Clark, an associate professor of medical humanities at the University\'s Medical Center. The Neilly Series is supported by the Andrew H. and Janet Dayton Neilly Endowment and the River Campus Libraries.
