WHO: The University of Rochester's incoming freshmen class, along with their parents, move carloads of belongings into their new homes at the Eastman School of Music and on the River Campus. Throughout the two days, more than 1,300 students will move into the downtown Eastman Commons Student Living Center and five residential halls on the River Campus in anticipation of the new academic year.
RIVER CAMPUS MOVE-IN: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, at Susan B. Anthony Residence Hall (off of Library Road) and the Quad residence hall buildings (Lovejoy, Tiernan, Hoeing, and Gilbert Halls on Faculty Road, Fraternity Road and Wilson Boulevard) on the River Campus. During the College Convocation, held at 5 p.m. on Thursday, President Joel Seligman, along with deans from the College, will welcome the Class of 2016 to the River Campus.
EASTMAN MOVE-IN: 8 a.m. to noon Monday, Aug. 27, Eastman Commons Student Living Center (100 Gibbs Street). At 11:30 on Monday, Eastman students are invited to a welcome picnic hosted by various administrators and student leaders.
WHAT: Move-In Day on both campuses marks the beginning of orientation, a time for students to learn the campus, explore opportunities for involvement in extra-curricular activities, and attend luncheons, barbeques, and receptions where they can meet their peers. On the River Campus, an orientation program designed for parents features seminars and workshops about residential life, student activities, and available resources.
ABOUT THE CLASS OF 2016: On the River Campus, the freshman class boasts more than 1,230 students, the largest incoming freshman class ever. Thirty-six percent of the Class of 2016 are from New York State, 48 percent arrive from 48 other states, and 16 percent hail from 45 foreign countries. Collectively, incoming freshmen earned an average 3.8 grade point average and scored above the 90th percentile on each of the three sections of the SAT. The in-coming transfer class includes 133 students.
Total undergraduate enrollment for the 2012-2013 academic year on the River Campus is about 4,650 students, having grown 22 percent in the past decade due to increases in both retention and recruitment.
At Eastman, approximately 130 incoming freshmen will begin classes on Tuesday, Sept. 4. Total undergraduate enrollment for the 2012-2013 academic year at the Eastman School of Music is approximately 520 students.
