University of Rochester history professors Celia Applegate and Lynn Gordon
will discuss contemporary Polish issues during a luncheon seminar sponsored
by the Skalny Center for Polish and Central European Studies at noon Monday,
Oct. 20, in the Gamble Room of Rush Rhees Library. The event is free and open
to the University community.
Through a cooperative agreement between the University of Rochester and Jagiellonian
University in Krakow, Applegate and Gordon traveled to Poland last May and June
with the support of the Skalny Center. They lectured in the Department of American
Studies at Jagiellonian and researched material for future projects.
At lunch, they will discuss such topics as Poland's vote on joining the European
Union, the place of American studies and women's studies in one Polish university,
and the tensions between tourism, collective memory, and historical identity
within Poland. Applegate and Gordon are associate professors in the Department
of History, and Gordon also is associate professor at the Margaret Warner Graduate
School of Education and Human Development.
Luncheon seminars are part of the Skalny Center's continuing Skalny Lecture
and Artist Series, which offers lectures, films, musical performances, and other
presentations about Poland and Central Europe. For lunch reservations, contact
the center at x5-9898.
