Ten students from area high schools will spend their summer working at the University of Rochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE), thanks to funding from the National Science Foundation.
Students who will complete their junior year in high school by this summer are invited to apply to the program. Ten students will work on LLE projects for eight weeks under the supervision of LLE researchers. In addition, the students will attend seminars in science, technology, ethics, and career orientation.
The program begins July 5 and culminates August 26 in a symposium where students will present the results of their summer work. The students will receive stipends of $150 per week.
The goal of this program is to expose students, including women and underrepresented minorities, to research in science and technology in a real environment, says David D. Meyerhofer, associate professor of mechanical engineering and assistant to the director for academic affairs at LLE. This will be the sixth year of the program and the fourth to be supported, in part, by the National Science Foundation.
Applications are due at LLE, 250 E. River Road, Rochester, NY 14623-1299 by March 31. Applicants must submit a supporting letter from a teacher and an application form. Some applicants will be interviewed, and students will be chosen by the end of April.
