Portraits and biographical sketches of 12 African-American writers are presented in the latest exhibition at the University of Rochester's Rush Rhees Library on the River Campus. The exhibit is on display in the Friedlander Lobby, and is free and open to the public.
"Black Authors: A Voice for the People" is based on an appointment calendar published by the Miller Brewing Co. in 1990, with artwork by Spencer Lawrence. The calendar offers a biographical sketch of a different author each month; this comprises the text for the exhibit.
Accompanying the displays are a selection of books-many of them first-edition copies. The volumes are part of the William and Hanelore Heyen Collection, located in the University's Department of Rare Books and Special Collections.
Authors showcased in the exhibit include Maya Angelou, James Baldwin, Langston Hughes, Amiri Baraka, Rita Dove, August Wilson, and Richard Wright. Works by John A. Williams, author of !Click Song, Sissie, The Man Who Cried I Am and many other works of fiction and nonfiction, are also on display. The University of Rochester houses the John A. Williams archive, which contains the original manuscripts for many of his books as well as extensive correspondence with other writers.
The exhibit continues during regular library hours through March 31.
