Carl Chiarenza was recently named the 1997 Distinguished Alumnus of the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences at Rochester Institute of Technology.
The award is given to alumni who, through their professional accomplishments, have reflected positively on RIT. The award will be presented at a banquet scheduled for Saturday, May 10.
Chiarenza, who received a bachelor of fine arts degree from RIT in 1957, is the Fanny Knapp Allen Professor of Art History at the University of Rochester. He has had solo exhibitions at the George Eastman House, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the International Center of Photography in New York City, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and the Tampa Museum of Art, among many others.
Chiarenza's traveling solo exhibition, Carl Chiarenza: Large-Scale Photographs, will be shown at the Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University beginning on March 9. The exhibit then travels to the University Gallery at Hobart & William Smith Colleges in early May.
