Crews representing more than 30 universities in the Northeast, Midwest and parts of Canada are expected to compete in the Stonehurst Capital Invitational Regatta Sunday, Oct. 15.
The competition, in its 12th year on the Genesee River in Genesee Valley Park, is a major fall rowing event and a highlight of the city of Rochester's River Romance Weekend. This year, it occurs on the final day of Sesquicentennial Weekend, the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the University of Rochester.
The races, which run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., are co-hosted by the University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology, and the Greater Rochester Metro Chamber of Commerce Inc. Last year's regatta drew more than 8,000 people; about 1,000 college students, both men and women, compete.
Viewing the races in Genesee Valley Park, south of Elmwood Avenue on the University side of the park, is free. Besides RIT and the University of Rochester, some of the other schools that have accepted the invitation are Dartmouth, Yale, Harvard, Colgate and University of Buffalo. Awards to winning teams will be presented about 4:15 p.m.
Musical groups from RIT and the University will perform throughout the day, and clowns and face painters will entertain children. At noon, high school students from crews in the Brighton, Fairport and Pittsford school districts will row in an exhibition.
Founded in 1990, Stonehurst Capital, the regatta's prime sponsor, is a private investment firm that pursues opportunities in small- to middle-market companies. A dozen firms and groups have joined Stonehurst in sponsoring tents for their guests at the river.
