Randall R. Curren, associate professor of education at the Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development at the University of Rochester, has been awarded a $50,000 grant to edit a volume on the philosophy of education.
The award from the Spencer Foundation will support Curren's work as editor of A Companion to the Philosophy of Education. The volume, which is the first of its kind in this field, will feature 45 original articles by 53 scholars of philosophy, education, political science, religion, law, psychology, and English. It will provide a comprehensive overview of historical movements and topics in the philosophy of education, from teaching and learning to the ethics and politics of schooling and issues in higher education. Curren believes that the finished work will be a valuable resource for other educational researchers and practitioners.
Curren, who also is associate professor of philosophy, is an educational consultant and the only philosopher in the United States whose teaching and research are divided equally between philosophy and education. He has received numerous honors and awards, and has published and edited several books and articles.
The Spencer Foundation was established to investigate ways in which education in its broadest sense can be improved around the world. Since 1968, the foundation, which is based in Chicago, has made grants totaling approximately $250 million.
