Four of America's top political analysts will discuss the United States Senate campaign between New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and First Lady Hillary Clinton from noon to 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11. The panel discussion will be held at the University of Rochester's Memorial Art Gallery, 500 University Avenue.
The four panelists are Fredric Dicker from The New York Post, Jay Gallagher from the Gannett News Service, Matthew Rees of The Weekly Standard, and John Zogby of Zogby Polling International. The moderator for the panel will be Curt Smith, senior lecturer in English at the University of Rochester as well as a former speechwriter for President George Bush.
For the past nine years, Dicker has been state editor of The New York Post. He hosts his own daily radio show on WROW-AM, Live from the State Capitol with Fred Dicker. A frequent guest of radio and television news shows in New York City, he has recently appeared on the national news programs CNN's Crossfire and CNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews discussing the New York Senate race. Dicker has won many journalism awards, including the prestigious "Gold Typewriter" prize of the New York Press Club.
Rees is a Washington-based reporter, where he writes about the presidential campaign, the Clinton administration, and Congress. Previously, Rees worked for The Wall Street Journal as an editorial page writer and was editorial features editor for The Wall Street Journal Europe. His freelance articles have been published in The Washington Post and The New York Times. Rees has also been a political commentator on The McLaughlin Group, Nightline, The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, MSNBC, and the Fox News Channel.
As Albany Bureau Chief, Gallagher covers state politics and government for 12 papers. He is a regular panelist for the New York Week in Review, carried by the state's public broadcasting stations, as well as a commentator on Inside Politics and The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. Gallagher has received many awards; most recently he was the winner of the 1998 Award for Excellence for state government coverage from the New York Newspaper Publishers' Association.
President and CEO of Zogby International in Utica, Zogby has been praised as the "most accurate pollster." He has been a political pollster for many news sources including NBC News, Fox News, Democrat and Chronicle, The New York Post, and Reuters America. Zogby regularly appears on the three nightly networks' new programs as well as MSNBC special programs, and CNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews. He has done polling, researching, and consulting for a broad field of business media, government, and political groups including Microsoft, Philip Morris, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, MCI, and the United State Census Bureau. His polls are posted daily on Yahoo.
The program is sponsored by the Office of Alumni Relations and Development for the University of Rochester. Preceding the luncheon and panel discussion there will be a reception in the Bausch and Lomb Parlor at 11:30 a.m. Free parking is available in the Goodman Street parking lot.
