Two University of Rochester alumni have joined the Board of Trustees this academic year.
Steven Chu, Geballe Professor of Physics at Stanford University, earned his bachelor's degree in math and physics from Rochester in 1970, and his doctorate in physics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1976. He won the Nobel Prize in 1997, along with two other scientists, for perfecting techniques to slow and trap individual atoms in order to study them. Chu received an honorary degree from Rochester in 1998.
Carl Williams, senior vice president and chief information officer of the Principal Financial Group, Des Moines, Iowa, earned his bachelor's degree from the State University College at Brockport in 1974 and an M.B.A. from the University of Rochester's William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration in 1975. Before joining the Principal Financial Group, Williams served as vice president for information technology at Amoco Oil, vice president for infosystems and technology at Macmillan Publishing Co., president of the Intertechnology Group, Inc., and senior vice president and director of management information systems at DDB Needham Worldwide. Earlier, he had worked for Xerox Corp. and American Can Co.
