Nan Johnson, director of the Susan B. Anthony University Center at the University of Rochester and a former Monroe County legislator, will deliver the keynote address at the May 23 commencement ceremony for Monroe Community College's Temporary Assistance for Students' Careers program.
The TASC program, previously called PACE, helps Department of Social Services aid recipients with children to complete an associate's degree. The TASC program encourages economic independence through training, education, and supportive services.
Johnson, former chair of the county Legislature's Human Services Committee, firmly believes that the welfare system can be a stepping stone to self-sufficiency. Besides heading the Susan B. Anthony University Center, Johnson is an adjunct professor in the Department of Political Science at the University. She is president of the local chapter of the American Association of University Women, and serves on the boards of the National Women's Hall of Fame and the Susan B. Anthony Memorial.
