The American Association for Public Opinion Research has named John Mueller's book, War, Presidents, and Public Opinion [1973, Wiley], one of the 50 most important books on public opinion research published since World War II. Mueller is professor of political science and of film studies at the University of Rochester.
The Association publishes professional and academic works, including the respected journal, Public Opinion Quarterly. In honor of the Association's 50th anniversary this year, its leadership council asked a committee to select the 50 most significant books that shaped research in the field. "This list of 50 meritorious books amply attests to the considerable intellectual capital that the field has generated in just the past 50 years," committee members wrote.
Seven judges chose the top 50 books. The judging panel included three former long-term editors and a current editor of Public Opinion Quarterly, as well as the past editor of the International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences.
