Roger Mertin, professor of art and art history at the University of Rochester, is one of six photographers selected for a 1999 McKnight Artist Fellowship. The $10,000 award will support work on his "Library Project," a collection of large-format, color views of local and neighborhood libraries across the United States and Canada.
Mertin, a resident of St. Paul, Minn., has been a member of the Rochester faculty since 1972.
He started the project on libraries 10 years ago, and plans to publish a book of photographs from the series. His photographs have been described as capturing the surprisingly idiosyncratic nature of librarians, bibliographic organization, and architectural evolution. Mertin also was recognized with a Minnesota State Arts Board Fellowship for Photography in 1998.
Administered by the University of Minnesota Department of Art, the McKnight fellowship program has supported Minnesota photographers since 1982. It is funded by the McKnight Foundation to enrich the quality and diversity of the arts in Minnesota.
Work from the photography fellows will appear in an exhibition at the University of Minnesota's Katherine E. Nash Gallery in fall 2000, and later travel statewide.
