Michelle Dowd and Robert Greene were recently named 1997 Andrew W. Mellon Fellows in Humanistic Studies. The two distinguished University of Rochester seniors were among nearly 800 applicants from across the country competing for 85 awards provided by the Mellon Foundation.
Dowd, an English and history double major, received the Mellon Fellowship based on her thesis work under the supervision of Professor Rosemary Kegl. Her thesis concerned itself with As You Like It and cross-dressing in the theater. A native of Omaha, Neb., Dowd will pursue her graduate studies in English at Columbia University and plans to teach at the college level.
Greene, a history major, received the fellowship based on his thesis concerned with the destruction of the Greek Catholic Church in West Ukraine after World War II. He completed his thesis under the supervision of Professor Jeffrey Burds. Greene, a native of Sarasota, Fla., will pursue his graduate studies in history at the University of Michigan and plans to pursue a career in teaching and research.
Mellon fellowships provide recipients financial support for the first year of graduate study in any U.S. or Canadian graduate school. The stipend for the new fellows in the 1997-98 academic year will be $13,750, plus tuition and mandated fees.
