Timothy J. Madigan has been appointed acquisitions editor for the University of Rochester Press. Madigan, who attended the University of Rochester from 1985 to 1986 as a graduate student in philosophy, served on the editorial staff of Free Inquiry magazine, a secular humanist journal dedicated to rational thought and free discussion, from 1987 to 1998. He worked as its editor from 1996 to 1998.
Madigan, a resident of Brighton, is currently completing his doctoral degree in philosophy from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
The University of Rochester Press, located at 668 Mt. Hope Ave., is the only academic press in the Rochester area. The Press, which was founded in November 1989, publishes about 20 books a year, with scholarly titles in a variety of fields, including science, history, music, art, African studies, and philosophy. British-based publisher Boydell & Brewer operates the Press on behalf of the University.
A few of the Press' recent titles are: Violence in Nigeria: The Crisis of Religious Politics and Secular Ideologies; The Gardano Music Printing Firms, 1569-1611; and Essays by Lewis White Beck: Five Decades as a Philosopher. Madigan is particularly pleased that the Beck book honors one of the University's most prominent professors.
"I think it is important that the Press works closely with the University community, and I hope that I can build further connections between us," he says. In addition to publishing works of a general scholarly nature, the Press also has three series: Eastman Studies in Music, which is edited by the Eastman School of Music's Ralph Locke; Rochester Studies in African History and the Diaspora; and Rochester Studies in Medical History.
Madigan's areas of interest involve business ethics, medical ethics, philosophy of religion, and philosophy and literature. He is a member of the executive committee of the Center for Clinical Ethics and Humanities in Health Care at the State University of New York at Buffalo, and edits its monthly newsletter. He is also the editor of The Bronte Society Newsletter and is on the editorial boards of Philo, Philosophy Now, and Common Sense.
