A lecture on the environmental effects of health care will be presented at 8 p.m. Friday, April 27, as part of the annual Lyon Daughters Lecture series. The series, which is sponsored by the Rochester Academy of Medicine, honors the memory of distinguished University of Rochester alumnus Edmund Lyon and his family.
Andrew L. Jameton, philosopher and professor of preventive and societal medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, will present this year's lecture. Titled "Health Care: At What Environmental Cost," the lecture will discuss how society's current stance on health care will affect future health needs and the environment.
The Lyon Daughters Lecture series was created 10 years ago by Allis Van Voorhis D'Amanda, the granddaughter of University of Rochester alumnus Edmund Lyon. Lyon, who graduated from the University in 1877, was a noted Rochester inventor, humanitarian, philanthropist, and manufacturer. He worked diligently to improve educational opportunities for all students, with a special focus on the services provided to the deaf community. Lyon passed his commitment to community action and philanthropy on to his three daughters, Elizabeth Lyon Kidd, Carolyn Lyon Remington, and Linda Lyon Van Voorhis.
The Lyon Daughter Lecture, dedicated to the memory of these women, focuses on issues related to bioethics. It is held annually at the Rochester Academy of Medicine, located in what was once the Lyon family home. This home, situated at 1441 East Ave. in Rochester, was donated to the academy in 1938 and is still the site of the academy.
The Lyon Daughters Lecture is free and open to the public. Seating for the event will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. This program will be signed for the hearing impaired. For more information, contact Dr. William Craver, executive director of the Rochester Academy of Medicine, at (585) 271-1313.
