Alan Lupack, director of the University of Rochester's Rossell Hope Robbins Library and an internationally known Arthurian scholar, is featured in a new educational video about the legends of King Arthur. The tape, part of a series called Tracing the Arthurian Tradition, was produced by Films for the Humanities and Sciences and is available to schools, colleges, and public libraries.
Lupack and his wife, Barbara Tepa Lupack, were among four scholars interviewed for the third program in the series, which focuses on modern versions of the legend. The couple has written a book, King Arthur in America, on interpretations and use of Arthurian lore in the United States.
In the video, Lupack discusses works on King Arthur and Arthurian themes by major modern authors such T. H. White and John Steinbeck. Barbara Tepa Lupack discusses the treatment of the legends in contemporary film and popular culture.
Lupack is the author of numerous articles and a book of poems titled The Dream of Camelot. He organized an international conference, "Camelot 2000: A Millennial Conference on Arthurian Legends," at the University of Rochester, and developed the Camelot and Robin Hood Web sites sponsored by the Robbins Library. He has edited several anthologies on Arthurian subjects and, together with his wife, amassed an extensive collection of books and memorabilia that is considered one of the finest in the world. The couple also has edited and published an anthology, Arthurian Literature by Women.
Currently, Lupack is working on the Oxford Guide to Arthurian Literature and Legend, a book covering Arthurian legends in literature, art, music, film, and popular culture from the Middle Ages to the present. The book is scheduled to go into production by Oxford University Press in 2004.
