Area high school juniors are invited to apply to a summer research program at the University of Rochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE), home to some of the world's top research in fusion and related optics research.
Students who will complete their junior year in high school by this summer are invited to apply to the program. For eight weeks, up to ten students will work alongside some of the world's top researchers in fusion, optics, and related technologies at LLE. In addition, the students will attend seminars in science, technology, ethics, and career orientation.
The program begins July 1 and culminates August 23 when students will present the results of their work. The students will work 40 hours a week and will receive $4.35 per hour.
The goal of the program is to expose students, including women and underrepresented minorities, to research in science and technology in a real environment, says David D. Meyerhofer, associate professor of mechanical engineering and assistant to the director for academic affairs at LLE. This will be the eighth year of the program. In past years some students have won national science awards for their work, and several are now pursuing careers in science.
Applications are due at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, 250 E. River Road, Rochester, NY 14623-1299 by April 17. Applicants must submit a supporting letter from a teacher and an application form. Some applicants will be interviewed, and students will be chosen by the end of April.
