Performers from the Limón Dance Company will present a lecture and demonstration 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 23, in the dance studio in Spurrier Hall on the University of Rochester River Campus. The company is recognized as America's oldest modern dance repertory company, in continuous operation since 1946.
The company has developed a repertory of demonstrations surrounding masterworks choreographed by José Limón and Doris Humphrey. Each explores the movements, themes, and major principles of the works, includes a discussion of the inspiration of the artist and the significance of the choreography, and concludes with a question-and-answer session with the audience and company. In Rochester, the company will be examining the piece "There is a Time," based on a quote from Chapter 3 of Ecclesiastes.
The dance techniques performed by the company work in opposition to the strict rules of classical ballet to demonstrate human emotions in a less stylized manner and to incorporate the natural movement patterns of the body and its relation to gravity.
The demonstration and lecture are open to the public. Tickets are $5 for students and $6 for the general public and will be available at the door. For more information contact the Dance Program at (585) 273-5150.
