The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Rochester
is hosting a series of lectures, titled "Home and Exile," that will
feature Jaume Marti Olivella of the State University at Albany and Carlos J.
Alonso of the University of Pennsylvania this fall. The lectures are free and
open to the public.
Olivella, an expert in Spanish peninsular literature, will present a lecture
on "Yoyes and Basque Cinema's Migrant Subject(s)" at 5 p.m. Monday,
Oct. 27, in the Gamble Room of the Rush Rhees Library on the University of Rochester's
River Campus. Olivella earned his doctorate degree in comparative literature
at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and is currently an assistant
professor of Spanish, Hispanic and Italian Studies in the Department of Languages,
Literatures and Cultures at the State University at Albany.
Alonso will deliver a talk on "Borges the Familiar: The Narrative of Forking
Paths" at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 12, in the Welles-Brown Room of the
Rush Rhees Library. His fields of expertise include 19th and 20th century Latin
American intellectual history and cultural production and modern literary theory.
Alonso, a professor of romance languages in the Department of Romance Languages
at the University of Pennsylvania, is the author of Modernity and Autochthony:
The Spanish American Regional Novel and The Burden of Modernity: The
Rhetoric of Cultural Discourse in Spanish America. He is also the editor
of PMLA, the journal of the Modern Language Association of America.
