The 12 Corners Klezmer Band will bring its rousing, infectious dance music to the University of Rochester on Saturday, Oct. 9.
For three hours beginning at 8:30 p.m., dancers will be urged to step, stomp, and move around Spurrier Gym on the River Campus. Previous knowledge of the "hora," "ifreylekhsi," and other circle and line dances is not necessary---all the steps will be demonstrated---but comfortable shoes are recommended.
Billed as "Jewish soul music from the old country," klezmer is enjoying a popular revival at concerts, weddings, and bar and bat mitzvahs. Folk-based melodies range from joyous to melancholy, reflecting life in the eastern European communities where the music developed.
The 12 Corners Klezmer Band was featured in performance at Chautauqua Institution this past summer. Founded by clarinetist Rob Mendel in 1994, the group also includes vocalist Bonnie Abrams, violinist Glenna Chance, accordionist Zeljko "Zack" Kuvizic, cellist Roey Mendel, banjo player Pete Rushevsky, percussionist Paul Cywinski, and Sean Michael Sullivan on drums, with dance leader Jim Anderson.
The event is sponsored by the Dance Program at the University, with proceeds benefiting the program's Performing Arts Series. Information about the newly formed Friends of the Dance Program and refreshments will be available.
For ticket purchase and parking information, contact the UR Dance Program at 273-5150.
