Sarah Jones, an accomplished poet, playwright, actress, and spoken word performer, will present her show, "Sketches of Ordinary People," at 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 23, in the Common Ground Café in Wilson Commons on the University of Rochester River Campus.
In her performance, Jones will become many different characters. There is Keisha Ray, the head-shakin' ghetto teenager who is a proud virgin; Joe, a racist Italian-American cop; and Miss Lady, an elderly street person who screams about Mayor Rudy Giuliani and anyone else who irritates her. These characters are all linked together by similar experiences: They have either been victims or perpetrators of hate.
Jones' biracial experiences help bring her work to many levels. She attended Bryn Mawr College and after graduation returned to New York, where has appeared at Lincoln Center, The Folger Theater, The Panasonic Jazz Festival, The Public Theater, and the 92nd Street Y. She was awarded the Nuyorican Poets Café 1997 Grand Slam Championship and was chosen by Time Out New York as one of the 99 people to watch in 1999. Most recently, the "spoken word diva," as Village Voice named her, completed a tour throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe.
"Sketches of Ordinary People" is free and open to the public. The event is co-sponsored by the African Caribbean Cultural Club and Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. For further information call Shani Carty at (585) 279-0015.
