Beginning in the fall of 1995, the University of Rochester will offer a full, four-year tuition scholarship to a high school student from the Washington D.C. area nominated by Project Excellence.
As a partnership institution, the University will award one four-year tuition scholarship to a Project Excellence winner each year. If the student demonstrates additional financial need beyond the tuition scholarship, Rochester has agreed to meet that need with additional aid.
Project Excellence is a college scholarship program for D.C. area high school seniors who display outstanding writing and speaking skills. Founded in 1987 by syndicated columnist Carl T. Rowan, the program nominated 103 high school seniors last May. The students received scholarships to attend colleges and universities valued at more than $2.4 million.
Each of the 160 schools in the Washington, D.C. area can nominate up to three students with grade point averages of 3.5 or above, as well as a fourth student who has made great academic progress in high school. Applicants must submit transcripts, recommendations, a personal essay, and participate in an oral competition. Last year, Project Excellence named 103 winners from the applicant group, and helped match winners with the colleges and universities of their choice.
Rochester is one of 19 universities that provide four-year scholarships to Project Excellence winners.
