Nicholas Bernard Dirks, professor of anthropology and history at Columbia University, will discuss interventions and the postcolonial period at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, in room 201 of Schlegel Hall on the River Campus.

Dirks' research interests focus on the anthropology and history of South Asia, with emphasis on the Tamil-speaking region, and recently on the period of British colonial rule in India. He writes on subjects as diverse as pre-colonial Indian history and contemporary Indian film.

His lecture, titled "Slouching toward Ambivalence: History, Anthropology, and Postcolonial Critique," is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the College Dean's Office along with the Departments of Anthropology, Art and Art History, English, History, Modern Languages and Cultures, and the Program in Visual and Cultural Studies.
