Adam Zagajewski, internationally acclaimed poet and author, will give a poetry reading at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 11, in the Welles-Brown Room of Rush Rhees Library on the University of Rochester's River Campus.
The leading poet of the "Generation of '68," or Nowa fala (New Wave), Zagajewski was an active dissident during the 1970s and some of his poems and essays are immersed in political themes. He has been widely recognized and published in Polish, English, French, Hebrew, Italian, German, Swedish, and Greek.
His books include A Thin Line, The Perfect Pitch, Another Beauty, Canvas, Tremor: Selected Poems, Two Cities, and Mysticism for Beginners. Zagajewski, who holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Jagellionian University in Krakow, Poland, has won numerous awards, including a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation award and a MacDowell Colony Prize Fellowship.
Since 1988, he has been visiting associate professor of English in the Creative Writing Program at the University of Houston. He also is co-editor of Zeszyty Literaackie(Literary Review), a Polish literary journal. English versions of his works have appeared in The New Yorker, New York Review of Books and the Partisan Review.
Zagajewski's visit, in celebration of National Poetry Month, is sponsored by the Skalny Center for Polish and Central European Studies, the Department of English, and the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Rochester.
