Ten speakers, including the developer of national standards for school counselors, will participate in a Jan. 27 conference for elementary, middle and secondary school counselors sponsored by the Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development at the University of Rochester. The all-day program on the theme of "Entering the New Millennium: Challenges and Changes for the School Counselor" will be held at Wilson Commons on the River Campus.

More than 100 counselors have registered for workshops, luncheon, and consultation with area professionals. The conference fee is $39; registration is due by Jan. 18.

This year's keynote speaker will be Carol A. Dahir, who is chair of national standards for the American School Counselor Association. Since 1994, Dahir has coordinated the national standards initiative, and has forged the research methods used to develop standards for counselors.

The conference, an annual event presented by the Warner School, will kick off with an hour-long networking session, followed by workshops on such topics as becoming more effective counselors, meeting and exceeding professional standards, counseling gay and lesbian adolescents, and assisting children who have anxiety about the future.

Workshops will be offered by local consultants in the field, professors from St. John Fisher College and SUNY Brockport, and counselors from area schools. Along with the Office of Professional Development of the Warner School, the conference has the support of the New York State School Counselor Association; the Monroe County School Counselor Association; Upsilon Rho and Nu Chapters of Chi Sigma Iota; the Department of Counselor Education, SUNY Brockport; the Counseling Department, Rochester City School District; and the Counseling and Human Development Faculty of the Warner School.
