An exhibit celebrating Rochester's rich music tradition, "Scaling the Heights: Rochester's Musical Innovators," boasts the many significant composers and performers who have Rochester connections: They were born here, lived here, or have ties to the world-famous Eastman School of Music.
This new installation in the reception area of the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections in Rush Rhees Library presents original manuscript scores, programs, recordings, and photographs of Rochester's finest music legends. The exhibit is free.
Among the many musicians showcased are composers David Diamond, Howard Hanson, Alec Wilder, and Alexander Courage. Also in this exhibit are performers such as Chuck Mangione, Paul Smoker, David Warfield, Cab Calloway, David Hochstein, and Renée Fleming. Most of the material comes from the collection of the Sibley Music Library at the Eastman School of Music.
Additionally, the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections is exhibiting "Mid-Century Jazz in Rochester, 1955-1962: Photographic Prints from the Paul Hoeffler Archive," an exhibit bringing together classic portraits and never-seen shots of artists of the hip 1950s jazz era.
Both exhibits are on display from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday; 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday; 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday; now through Feb. 15, 2003, on the University of Rochester's River Campus. For more information, contact (585) 275-4477.
