Four University of Rochester undergraduates have received Barth-Crapsey research fellowships. This is the eighth round of the competition in four years.
The purpose of the award is to stimulate high-quality, primary research by undergraduates in the humanities and social sciences -- particularly government, politics and political history, social and religious history, and literature. It also encourages exploration of the historical and cultural heritage of the Rochester-Monroe County area.
The award allocates up to $600 per winner for the acquisition of books and documents, research-related travel and other research expenses. Recipients will present the results of their work upon completion.
Adam Cugalj, a junior Spanish major from Orchard Park, N.Y., will examine " 'The Bean Lady:' The Life of Mrs. Iowne Anderson of the Iroquoian Nation." Cugalj's adviser is Professor Jarold Ramsey of the English department.
Michelle Dowd, a junior English and history major from Omaha, Neb., will research "The Stonor Family Correspondence in the Light of Late Medieval British History." Professor Richard Kaeuper, of the history department, serves as Dowd's adviser.
Robert Greene, a junior history-Russian studies major from Sarasota, Fla., will explore "The Destruction of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church at the End of World War II." Advised by history professor Jeffrey Burds, Greene will conduct his research in Moscow.
Justin Nordstrom, a junior history major from Reading, Mass., incorporates a local angle in studying "The Role of Rochester's Bishop McQuaid in American Catholic Education." Nordstrom's adviser is Professor Joan Rubin, of the history department.
The Barth-Crapsey awards are funded through a gift to the University from Rochester resident Arthur Crapsey and his late wife, Class of 1940 alumna Jean Barth-Crapsey, who passed away last December. For those wishing to honor her distinguished service to the University and the City of Rochester, her family welcomes contributions to the Barth-Crapsey Endowment in her memory.
