The University of Rochester Symphony Orchestra invites experienced orchestra musicians to apply for membership by auditioning for positions.

Auditions will be held at Strong Auditorium on the River Campus the week of Aug. 28 and will consist of three to four minutes of solo work of the candidate's choice plus sight reading from standard orchestral repertoire.

To schedule an audition time, contact the Department of Music after Aug. 15 at 275-2828.

The University of Rochester Symphony Orchestra, which numbers nearly 100 members, includes students as well as experienced and talented musicians from throughout the Rochester community. Several community members of the orchestra have participated in the ensemble for more than 20 years. Rehearsals are held Tuesdays from 7:30 to 10 p.m. The ensemble presents four free concerts each year under the baton of David Harman, professor of music and director of orchestral activities at the College.

Now in its 46th season, the orchestra performs a repertoire of major works from the standard orchestral repertoire, which this season will include Mahler's Symphony No. 4, Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances, Stravinsky's Symphony in Three Movements, and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4.

Concerts feature guest soloists from the community as well as student winners of the symphony orchestra concerto competition. This season Tony Caramia, professor of piano at the Eastman School of Music, is scheduled to perform Gershwin's I Got Rhythm Variations with the orchestra.
