Mireille Rosello, professor of French and comparative literature at Northwestern University, will speak about "French Television and 'Visible Minorities' " at 6 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 16, in 407 Schlegel Hall on the University of Rochester River Campus.
Rosello will present clips from French television to address the representation of "visible minorities" in visual media, one of the most explosive issues in French society today.
Rosello has written five books and three translations, including Declining the Stereotype: Ethnicity and Representation in French Cultures and Infiltrating Culture: Power and Identity in Contemporary Women's Writing.
She is currently working on her sixth book, Postcolonial Hospitality: The Immigrant as a Guest, which explores the ways in which Western superpowers have rewritten ideals of hospitality-often borrowed from other sources-and how this sometimes constitutes an incompatible system of ideals.
