Michael Ann Holly, professor and chair of the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Rochester, has been named an Ailsa Mellon Bruce Senior Fellow with the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
Holly's appointment will run during two consecutive fall semesters beginning this year. At the gallery's Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, Holly will examine the writing of art history and its melancholic connections to the art of the past, focusing on the turn-of-the-century Viennese school of art history. She will also look at parallels with the dilemma of history writing today.
Holly, who holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University, has received numerous other awards, including fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Guggenheim Foundation. She is the author of Past Looking: Historical Imagination and the Rhetoric of the Image and Panofsky and the Foundations of Art History, both published by Cornell University Press.
Holly has been a member of the Rochester faculty and chair of her department since 1986. The department's Visual and Cultural Studies Program recently was featured in The Chronicle of Higher Education for its progressive approach. It has the only such doctoral program in the country.
