The University of Rochester Wind Symphony will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 24, in Strong Auditorium on the River Campus. The concert is free and open to the public. The program will include "Allerseelen" by Richard Straus; "Toccata" by Frescobaldi; Grondahl's "Trombone Concerto;" and Leemans's "March of the Belgian Paratroopers." The concerto will feature senior Jonathan Schmid as soloist, and guest conductor for the "March" will be senior David Stringham. The Wind Symphony is composed of University students who are musicians but whose majors vary from music to engineering. The ensemble studies and performs standard and contemporary wind music as well as transcriptions from other genres. Resident conductor of the Wind Symphony is Cindi Johnston-Turner, a doctoral student at the Eastman School of Music, where she teaches undergraduate conducting and is doctoral assistant conductor of the Eastman Wind Orchestra. Before coming to Rochester, Johnston-Turner taught and directed wind and jazz ensembles in Ontario, Canada, where she was awarded the Ontario Secondary School Federation of Teachers Excellence in Education Award and the Marion Drysdale Leadership Among Women Teachers Award.
