A week of programs focusing on the environmental dangers of toxins to human health will be presented Nov. 18 to 22 at the University of Rochester. Grassroots Students for the Environment, Students for Social Justice, and the campus chapter of Amnesty International are sponsoring the events. All events are free and will be held on the University's River Campus.

Maria Maybee of Great Lakes United will speak on environmental justice and the pollution of the Great Lakes at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, in room 2110 of Dewey Hall. At 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, the students will host Thomas A. Gasiewicz, professor and chair of the Department of Environmental Medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He will speak on the hazardous chemical dioxin and its effects on the body. The program will be held in the Delta Upsilon fraternity house.

The film Drumbeat for Mother Earth will be shown at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, in room 201 of Lattimore Hall. Produced by Greenpeace and the Indigenous Environmental Network, the film documents the social and environmental effects of industrial chemicals on Native American people and their lands. The film has won several awards since it was released in 1999.
