Rochester artist Tom Carpenter explores the relationship between beauty standards and the alteration of physical appearance to conform to those standards in his exhibition "This Happy," which can be seen at the Hartnett Gallery in Wilson Commons on the University of Rochester's River Campus from Monday, Jan. 19, through Wednesday, Feb. 25.

An opening reception and talk by the artist will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23, in the gallery.

Carpenter, who specializes in mixed media, alternative image transfer, and painting, is an instructor in the Creative Workshop at the Memorial Art Gallery. In his current exhibition, he explores how media like magazines and television present ideals of beauty and also the means to reach these ideals: through the purchase of advertised products.

Also a teacher at St. Monica's School in Rochester, Carpenter has exhibited at High Falls Fine Art Gallery in "Where are the Best Paintings in Rochester?" and in the Creative Workshop Faculty Show at the Memorial Art Gallery.

Hours for the Hartnett Gallery are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free and open to the public.
