Jazz Mandolin Project, a jazz band that works around the mandolin as the solo instrument, will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, March 19, in Strong Auditorium on the University of Rochester’s River Campus.

Led by mandolinist Jamie Masefield, a longtime member of the Preservation Jazz Hall Band, the group’s hallmark is its energetic on-stage improvisations. Its unique sound blends modern and traditional jazz, rock classics, and world music into a spontaneous and constantly evolving lineup.

Jazz Mandolin Project, which has performed in Europe and Japan, is coming to Rochester as part of its current tour of the Northeast. The group has five recordings: its debut CD, the self-titled Jazz Mandolin Project; Tour De Flux; Xenoblast; After Dinner Jams; and Jungle Tango, released in 2003.

Tickets to Jazz Mandolin Project are $10 for the general public and $5 for University of Rochester undergraduate students. They are available at Lakeshore Records, 370 Park Ave.; the Common Market in Wilson Commons on the River Campus; and at the door. The performance at the University is cosponsored by UR Concerts and North Coast 105.9 WJZR-FM. For more information, call (585) 275-5911.
