Paintings by Mary Orwen, a well-known Rochester artist whose work has been shown in more than 40 exhibitions, will be on display opening Monday, July 26, in the Gallery at the Art and Music Library on the University of Rochester's River Campus. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

A lifelong painter, Orwen has taught and lectured about art, including at local universities and the Memorial Art Gallery. She often focuses on nature themes in her non-representational style.

Orwen first exhibited her work in 1939. Her paintings are in the collections of several museums, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. She spent many years living and traveling in Europe, and worked for U.S. Military Intelligence during and after World War II.

In the local arts community, she is a member of the Arena Group, and has participated in its exhibits at MAG and at other venues. A reception with the artist will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, in the Gallery at the Art and Music Library, which is located on the ground floor of Rush Rhees Library.

This latest showing of selected paintings, titled "Shafts of Sunlight," will continue through Thursday, Aug. 26.
