“Dos,” an exhibit reflecting the heritage of two area Latino artists, will be on display at the Hartnett Gallery in Wilson Commons on the University of Rochester’s River Campus from Monday, Aug. 30, to Monday, Oct. 4.
Through photographs, painting, and sculpture, Manuel Rivera-Ortiz and Yolanda Daliz share their vision of their culture and demonstrate how their heritage has shaped their work.
Rivera-Ortiz is a documentary photographer whose portrayal of people in harsh environments reveals the strength of their spirit. “(It) comes from my own experience with poverty,” he explained. “I grew up very poor in Guayama, Puerto Rico, in the ’70s. These things you can never forget.”
Daliz’s work is dominated by colorful mixed media paintings and sculptures of animals in tropical settings, exploring various psychological states of humans. “My work varies from serious to humorous, gesture to abstract, soft to brutal,” she said.
Hours for the Hartnett Gallery are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free and open to the public.
