A full schedule of entertainment and activities during Yellowjacket Weekend is an opportunity for faculty, staff, and their families to join students in starting off the new year.

On Friday, Sept. 10, the annual College Convocation and presentation of the Goergen Awards, scheduled for noon on Dandelion Square, will provide a formal start to the weekend. The ceremony will be immediately followed by a picnic for students, faculty, and staff of the College on the Wilson Commons Quadrangle, and later by the Activities Fair spotlighting student clubs from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Dandelion Square.

Later that day, the Capitol Steps, a political satire troupe, will perform at 8 p.m. in Strong Auditorium, and folk/pop singer-songwriter Rebecca Pronsky will perform at 10 p.m. in the Common Ground Café in Wilson Commons.

On Saturday, the Interfaith Chapel will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for personal prayer and meditation in remembrance of the events of September 11.

The family-oriented highlight of the weekend will be “Game Day” from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, on the Wilson Commons Quadrangle. The outdoor festival’s giant slides, games, food vendors, and music will appeal to all ages. In addition, Enter the Haggis, a popular Celtic rock band, will perform on the steps of Wilson Commons from 5 to 7 p.m.

Sports will play a major role during the weekend, with the men’s soccer team taking on St. Lawrence University at 7 p.m. on Friday and Clarkson University at 3 p.m. Saturday in Fauver Stadium. The women’s soccer team will play St. John Fisher at noon on Saturday. The home football game against St. John Fisher College, which starts at 7 p.m. Saturday, will feature the Rochester Scottish Pipes & Drums at half-time.

In addition, UR Cinema Group will be screening two movies in Hoyt Auditorium as part of its regular schedule: Super Size Me at 7, 9, and 11 p.m., on Friday; and Kill Bill Vol. 2 at 7 and 9:30 p.m. and midnight on Saturday. Students can also take advantage of a “Fashionably Late Night” jaunt to the High Falls District Saturday night at 10 p.m.

Yellowjacket Weekend wraps up Sunday with the Black Students Union’s annual “Black Out,” a welcome by minority organizations to new and returning students, at 10 p.m. on the steps of Wilson Commons. For further information, contact x5-5911.
