Rochester artist J. Rebecca Grant fashions new objects from discarded printed material in an exhibit titled "Nocturnes & Other Work" now through Friday, Oct. 29, in the Gallery at the Art & Music Library at the University of Rochester. A reception with the artist will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, in the gallery.
Grant's first solo show displays handmade books and boxes that reflect "the remarkable secrets I discover in the discarded printed material I obsessively collect," she writes in the introduction to the exhibit. Her work is intimate in scale and crafted with precision. Cut-out animals, people, and words on paper create environments colored in the grays, blues, and blacks of the evening and night. The artist says that her bouts of insomnia led her to the nocturne theme.
The artist earned a bachelor's degree in art history at SUNY University at Buffalo in 1994. She has exhibited in group shows and resides in Rochester.
The Gallery at the Art & Music Library is located on the ground floor of Rush Rhees Library on the University's River Campus. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; noon to 5 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.
