The Hartnett Gallery at the University of Rochester presents the work of several local artists at its Rochester Invitational Exhibition from Thursday, Jan. 27, through Sunday, Feb. 20. The juried exhibition features the work of four upstate New York artists: Colleen Buzzard, Matthew Friday, Maria Friske, and Rolando Galardi Segura.
A Rochester resident and studio artist, Buzzard’s installations and mixed-media works have been exhibited in various local galleries as well as in several galleries in London, England.
Friday is an assistant professor and former director of the film and video arts program at SUNY Oswego. His current paintings deal with issues of postmodernity and the nature of contemporary life.
Friske is a painter and graphic designer whose work examines cultural diversity through a series of paintings documenting successful community gathering spaces in Rochester. In 2004, she was awarded a Rochester Contemporary’s “Members Show.” Rochester Contemporary is a non-profit arts organization serving audiences of western New York state. The “Members Show” is designed as a venue for RoCo members to exhibit and promote their work.
A graduate of the National School of Arts in Havana, Cuba, Segura now lives and works in Rochester. His mixed-media and sculpture work has been exhibited in Cuba, Bolivia, and around the Rochester area
An opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 2, will feature talks by the artists. The exhibition and opening reception are free and open to the public. The Hartnett Gallery is located in Wilson Commons on the River Campus and is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 6 p.m. on weekends.
