Two professors at the American Studies Center of the University of Warsaw will describe a new vein in Poland's public discourse that raises topics of gender and sexuality at noon Friday, Feb. 4, in the Gamble Room of Rush Rhees Library on the University of Rochester's River Campus. The lecture and lunch are free and open to the University community.
Assistant Professors Tomasz Basiuk and Agnieszka Graff, who are Fulbright Scholars at New York University for 2004-05, will combine their expertise in gay and lesbian writing, popular culture, and feminist theory on the topic of "Letting Them See Us: The New Visibility of Gender and Sexuality in the Public Sphere in Poland."
The lecture is co-sponsored by the Skalny Center for Polish and Central European Studies, the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures, the Graduate Program in Visual and Cultural Studies, and the Susan B. Basiuk and Graff also are among many partners in a two-year series of academic collaborations between the University of Rochester and the University of Warsaw supported by a grant from the Fulbright Scholar Alumni Initiatives Awards Program.
Luncheon seminars are part of the Skalny Center's continuing Skalny Lecture and Artist Series, which offers lectures, films, musical performances, and other presentations about Poland and Central Europe.
