The Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender and Women’s Studies at the University of Rochester will present its 12th annual Interdisciplinary Graduate Conference on Tuesday, March 22, in the Gamble Room of Rush Rhees Library on the University’s River Campus. The event will begin with a breakfast at 9 a.m. and culminate with a closing reception at 4:15 p.m. in the Welles-Brown Room of the library. The conference is free and open to the public.
Three panels of University graduate students will be featured at the conference, each one moderated by a University professor. The panels will focus on the topics of gendering practices, gender, race and ethnicity, and sexuality and the politics of visibility. Opening and closing remarks will be made by Susan Gustafson, director of the Susan B. Anthony Institute and professor of German and comparative literature in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures.
This year’s keynote speaker will be Tim Dean, associate professor of English at the University of Buffalo. His talk is titled “Breeding Culture: Bare-backing, Bug-chasing, and Gift-giving.” Dean, who received his doctorate from Johns Hopkins University, is a former British civil servant and the author of several books, including Beyond Sexuality, Gary Snyder and the American Unconscious, and Homosexuality and Psychoanalysis, co-edited with Christopher Lane.
The conference is co-sponsored by the School of Nursing, Modern Languages and Cultures, Frederick Douglass Institute of African and African-American Studies, Department of History, Department of Philosophy, Film and Media Studies, Department of Clinical and Social Psychology, Visual and Cultural Studies Program, Department of Art and Art History, Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development, Department of English, and the Graduate Organizing Group.
