Robert E. Hall, the Robert and Carole McNeil Joint Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and professor in the Department of Economics at Stanford University, will present this year’s McKenzie Lecture at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 14, in room 318/418 of Gleason Hall on the University of Rochester’s River Campus. The lecture, titled “New Ideas about the Causes and Magnitudes of Recessions,” is free and open to the public.

Hall is an applied economist who has made important contributions to the field of macroeconomics, including but not limited to unemployment and labor supply, labor productivity, and tax policy. He is the author or co-author of numerous articles and eight books.

As a member of the National Academy of Sciences, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a fellow of the Econometric Society, Hall has advised a number of government agencies on national economic policy. He has served on the National Presidential Advisory Committee on Productivity, and has been director of the research program on economic fluctuations and growth of the National Bureau of Economic Research since 1977. He also is vice president of the American Economic Association.

The McKenzie Lecture honors Wilson Professor Emeritus of Economics Lionel McKenzie for his outstanding contributions to the economics field and his lifelong commitment to the Rochester doctoral program in economics. Each year, graduate students at Rochester in the Department of Economics select an outstanding scholar to deliver this lecture in honor of McKenzie.
